Turning the Tide – The Future of Inclusive Waterfronts in Rotterdam

Our environments shape every aspect of our lives, though we do not yet fully understand how. We must develop a better understanding of how we are affected by them, and work hard to improve those environments for people everywhere.

The American Van Alen Institute, together AIR,  will be organizing a public conversation about designing meaningful connections and connecting places. Among others, the Danish design bureaus BIG, 3xN and Schmidt Hammer Lassen are part of the delegation traveling to Rotterdam on the advice of Mecanoo. From these and other agencies, we will learn about the practice in urban connectivity in Scandinavian, British and American cities.

The interview is led by Bas van der Pol (director AIR) and David van Leer (Executive Director Van Alen Institute). The days following this meeting, the Van Alen Institute organizes a design charette on Zuid (the South bank of Rotterdam).  'Dit is Zuid' is, together with Eric Dullaert (Program Manager Cultural Impulses), a partner of the Van Alen Institute and also provides tours around neighborhoods and districts in development in Zuid.

More information about this program follows.  The Van Alen Institute program is made possible by Rockwool.
